The Steelers, after finishing the regular season with a 11-5 record, became the fourth wild card team, and third in nine years, to win the Super Bowl and also became the first #6 seed in the NFL playoffs to win a Super Bowl (after becoming the first #6 seed to win a conference title). Meanwhile, the Seahawks entered the contest after posting an NFC-best 13-3 regular season record.

The Steelers defeated the Seahawks, 21–10, to join the Dallas Cowboys and the San Francisco 49ers as the only franchises to win five Super Bowls. The game, played on February 5, 2006 at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan, drew a 41.6 rating with a 62 share in the audience.

Then with less than two minutes left in the first half, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger ran for 1-yard sneak.
